Company Milestones
Founded in San Diego in 1986 by a group of 17 entrepreneurial brokers (as Business Real Estate Brokerage Company, Inc.), Grubb & Ellis|BRE Commercial has established itself as an industry leader by becoming one of Southern California’s largest privately-owned and operated commercial real estate brokerage companies.
2008:
  • Partners with Sandra Clark of Space Matters to form a new service line: Project Management
 
2007:
  • Forms two new service lines - Mortgage Brokerage and Advisory Services - with key recruits from competitors
  • Ranks number one in the total number of transactions (Source: San Diego Business Journal's 2007 Book of Lists)
  • Ranks among "San Diego's Top 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies" by the San Diego Business Journal
  • Hosts over 30 clients and their spouses to a Client Appreciation Trip in Napa Valley, CA
  • Grubb & Ellis merges with NNN Realty Advisors, Inc.
  • Forms the Capital Markets Group with key recruites from competitors to expand services
  • Acquires new CFO / COO, Brent Rivard
  • Downtown office relocates to a nearby, newly constructed building near PETCO Park
  • Acquires El Cajon commercial real estate brokerage company, East County Properties, expanding our East County presence in San Diego County
  • Forms a strategic partnership with Temecula-based, WestMar Commercial Brokerage, Inc., now operating as Grubb & Ellis|WestMar in South Riverside County
 
2006:
  • Ranks number one (for the third year in a row) in the total number of transactions (Source: San Diego Business Journal’s 2006 Book of Lists)
  • Ranks number 59 among San Diego’s Top 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies by the San Diego Business Journal
  • Celebrates 20 years in business (formed October 1986 by 17 entrepreneurial brokers)
  • Grew from 170 to 192 Professionals
  • Implements its “Push to Excellence” Program for positioning the company has having the best trained professionals in the industry
  • Carlsbad office relocates to a nearby, newly constructed, Class A office building, increasing office square feet by 50%
  • Hosts over 30 clients and their spouses to a Client Appreciation Ski Trip in Deer Valley, UT
 
2005:
  • Ranks number one in the total number of transactions (Source: San Diego Business Journal’s 2005 Book of Lists)
  • Ranks among "San Diego’s Top 100 Fastest Growing Private Companies" by the San Diego Business Journal
  • 24% Increase in Revenue
  • Grows from 126 to 170 Professionals
  • Hires a new Vice President of Client and Research Services
  • Relocates and expands corporate headquarters, increasing office square feet by 135%
  • Expands our market share in Southern California with the opening of a new office in Temecula (Riverside County) bringing the total number of BRE-owned offices to five
  • Completes the Buy-Sell Agreement
2004:
  • Ranks number one in the number of transactions (Source: San Diego Business Journal’s 2004 Book of Lists)
  • BRE Affiliates with Grubb & Ellis Company to form Grubb & Ellis|BRE Commercial, elevating brand recognition
  • Revenues surpass $30 million
  • Launches new web-based General Ledger and Property Database Systems
  • Strengthens client relationships by funneling investments into high-class client appreciation events
  • Opens an office in Otay Mesa, CA; strengthening our market share in Southbay
2003:
  • Acquires A.W. Arendsee Real Estate in Downtown San Diego, adding a third BRE office
  • Plants the “BRE flag” in Phoenix by investing in one of the top brokerage operations previously owned by Grubb & Ellis, now operating as Grubb & Ellis|BRE Commercial, LLC—a broker-owned enterprise
  • Establishes CFO position with Tatum Partners, Inc.
  • Establishes Director of Marketing/Business Development Department
2002:
  • John D. Frager joins BRE as the new President & CEO
  • Recruits 15 new brokers from competing firms
  • Office Division becomes the largest Office Specialty Group in San Diego County
  • Corporate headquarters expands
  • Expands brokerage services to include Financial Analysis
  • Forms Creative Services Department to improve desktop and marketing support
  • Hires new Market Research Director and doubles the staff count in Research

2001:

  • Expands brokerage services to include Asset Management

2000:

  • Revenues surpass $20 million

1998/1999:

  • BRE enjoys strong growth from the highly active late-80s real estate market

1997:

  • Company operates under new name: BRE Commercial

1996:

  • Establishes reputation as the most dominate brokerage firm in North County

1995:

  • Company joins NAI, one of the world’s largest and most comprehensive association of commercial real estate service providers

1994:

  • Ted Phoenix joins the company as the new President

1993:

  • New North County brokers become established and start hitting high production

1992:

  • Large number of North County brokers are recruited
  • Marc Doyle appointed as Senior Vice President and Managing Officer of the Carlsbad office

1991:

  • North County presence established with the opening of an office in Carlsbad, CA
  • James Stenderup is appointed President

1990:

  • With financial health (debt-free), the firm weathers the start of the recession

1989:

  • All loans are paid off, and the firm remains debt-free from here on
  • John Rife is appointed President

1988:

  • The firm has now doubled its number of agents from when it was founded

1987:

  • The firm’s bank hosts a dinner honoring our one-year anniversary, a very important milestone for a start-up
1986:
  • Business Real Estate Brokerage Company, Inc. is founded in San Diego by a group of 17 entrepreneurial brokers
  • Rick Sanborn is appointed President
